Longest night, returning light
Date: 2025-12-21
As the year turns inward, Winter Solstice, or dongzhi, marks the 22nd solar term in the traditional Chinese calendar. It brings the longest night of the year, and a quiet promise of returning light. Shadows stretch, stars linger, and the cold settles deep into the earth. Kitchens glow with warmth as dumplings steam, and families hold hot bowls, gathering closely. Between darkness and dawn, we pause, replenish our strength, and welcome the lengthening days ahead with patience, resilience, and hope.
